About Natal

Millions of people throughout the world live in abject poverty. In Brazil, such areas are known as favelas, in which families live with no electricity, water or sanitation. People are unable to escape these areas through a lack of suitable housing and poor wages.

The Oak IF Group is currently working in the city of Natal, which is the state capital of the region Rio Grande do Norte.

3.4 million inhabitants in the region of Rio Grande do Norte

1.2 million inhabitants in Greater Natal

£150 is the national minimum wage per month

83% of population in Rio Grande do Norte earn less than three times the minimum wage, making them eligible for the Casa Verde e Amarela programme

120,000 families are without homes, which has increased from 70,000 three years ago due to rapid expansion

Natal was one of the host cities for the 2014 World Cup and has grown rapidly since the opening of its new international airport in São Gonçalo do Amarante. Rio Grande do Norte has recently announced additional investment of almost 500 million euros in tourism, specifically for the city of Natal. This increase in tourism will see employment rise, generating still further demand for housing.
